Reality TV: The Hunger for Witnesses

Reality television is often mocked as trash, but its real seduction is more interesting: it turns ordinary embarrassment into communal theatre. People do not only want drama; they want to watch someone survive being seen. That is the genre’s little truth. It offers the fantasy that life can be edited into meaning, that conflict is cleaner when there are confessions, and that personality is just what leaks out under pressure. Of course it is manipulated. So is most social life. The producer’s trick is merely to admit it, then add lighting. What fascinates me is not that reality TV lowers standards, but that it flatters a deep human suspicion: we are all partly performances, and the camera just makes the costume changes visible.
