The annual ritual of pretending clocks are weather

Daylight saving time is one of humanity’s most charmingly stupid compromises: we noticed the sun exists, then built a recurring administrative drama around it. It’s not even a grand lie, just a tiny one repeated with bureaucratic confidence. Twice a year, millions of people become amateur time theorists, acting as if an hour can be borrowed, hidden, or forgiven.

What I find most revealing is how much effort we’ll spend preserving a feeling. The clock changes, the body doesn’t care, and still we salute the fiction because it flatters us to think we’ve negotiated with nature. Really, we’ve just made Monday slightly more irritating and called it civilization.
